Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a non urgent question why not Ask Mantra on our members forum!

Does Mantra Tattoo do custom work and or freehand work?

Yes, we will design custom work for any job that requires it.

On bigger pieces of custom and or freehand work a consultation appointment may be arranged with an artist. Mantra also will issue on the first meeting with a detailed design description form, which upon completion will give guidance upon drawing (this includes the clients con tact details, a detailed description of the work required, placement, style, colour etc).

The artists generally have a two week backlog of drawing, so once drawn we can contact you and make sure you are happy with the finished design before an appointment is made. As far as freehand work goes all artists undertake freehand work, the design will be drawn onto the skin using a skin pen, and only when both client and artist are completely happy, tattooing will commence!

Do you cover up old or unwanted tattoos?

Yes - we are prepared to give a consultation on any tattoos, either unwanted or just old and tired. The majority of tattoos are either coverable, or when relined and re-coloured can often be made as good as new!

Where are you based?

The studio is based in Cheltenham , England . More specifically, we are based at the end of the Lower High Street at No.1 St. Georges Street .

How does the appointment system work?

Basically all artists' bookings at Mantra run on an appointment only basis. However, walk-ins are sometimes possible if a cancellation occurs. Once you have decided on your tattoo and a time, price and artist allocated, a deposit is taken and you are booked for your tattoo!

Why do I need a deposit?

A deposit secures your artists time, so that if you fail to show for an appointment then the artists time is not wasted. If you require to cancel (or change) an appointment then a period of 48 hours notice is required. A deposit will be roughly equal to a quarter of the total price of the tattoo.

Can I draw my own tattoo?

Yes you can draw your own tattoo, although it will often need to be re-drawn by your relevant artist.

Is your studio sterile and hygienic?

Here at Mantra Tattoo we ensure the highest standards of hygiene throughout the studio. The autoclave and sterilisation equipment far excede levels required by law (and generally found throughout our hospitals!). For each appointment new sterile needles are used, and a whole host of procedures employed.

Do you do temporary tattoos?

No, we only apply permanent tattoos.

Do I need to do anything before or after receiving my tattoo?

The night before your tattoo try and not do anything excessive! Do not drink alcohol as it thins the blood and will make your tattoo extremely difficult to complete. After receiving your tattoo be sure as to follow your aftercare advice strictly. The following is all re-iterated on your appointment studio card.

How do I know how much my tattoo will cost?

Before any tattoo is started a quote on your complete tattoo will be given (by the artist scheduled to apply your tattoo).

I am 16, can I get tattooed?

No. Unfortunately, even with your parents consent, if you are under 18 then you cannot get tattooed at Mantra Tattoo.

Does it hurt?

Yes tattooing is uncomfortable. Some people liken the pain to fingernails on sunburn, but it is bearable, and contrary to popular thought women tend to have a higher pain threshold then men!

Will I be able to see the tattoo on me before the appointment begins?

Yes before any tattoo commences, either a carbon-stenciled image will be placed on your skin (or a skin pen image), and you will be able to view the tattoo in the mirror.

Do I have to sign anything with regards to my tattoo?

A tattoo release form will be completed prior to every tattoo. This will include basic client information, some guidance on the way to treat your tattoo, and a quick assessment on your suitability for the tattoo procedure.

Hello Mr. Web-Monkey I am susceptible to rumour and general chit-chat, am I right in thinking Mantra is expensive and has a long waiting list?

A-ha, Mr. Rumour rears his ugly head again. Firstly we like other businesses frequently check our rates alongside our competitors (tattooists in the local area and internationally). We have found that we are very reasonably priced, are certainly not the most expensive studio in the area, but feel our work more than warrants what we charge. As for the waiting list, yes you will have to book for your tattoo. However, the tattoo industry is seasonal with the busy peak times usually around the height of summer. Each artist runs a comprehensive cancellation list and will make every effort to make your booking as close to your expectations as possible. Quick note from the monkey... your tattoo is for life, I would suggest it is worth waiting for in the grand scheme of things, and it is unwise to (as you would with any other product) not to question something that seems too cheap or readily available.
