The Rapid Rise of Bob Tyrrell

August 2003

Bob describes his relatively late start as a tattooist and the influences on his art.

Bob TyrrellHaving an incredible artist for a father, I grew up wanting to be an artist myself. I started collecting monster magazines at age seven, and was heavily influenced by Creepy, Eerie, Famous Monsters of Filmland and Mad Magazine, as well as fantasy artists like Frank Frazetta. Horror movies were always a huge inspiration - and still are.

I started playing guitar as a teenager and that consumed all of my time. I pretty much gave up drawing and spent the next fifteen years playing in bands. I'd wanted a tattoo for years and at age thirty finally got one which sparked an interest in drawing again. I spent the next few years taking an art class here and there and thinking how cool it would be to tattoo.

Thanks to Tramp at Eternal Tattoos, I finally started tattooing in the summer of 1997. I got a late start, but man, what a great time to start tattooing! I was fortunate to learn in a great shop from some killer artists. I like tattooing in many styles but my absolute favorite stuff to do is portrait work - and anything to do with horror.

I'm heavily influenced by tattoo artists like Paul Booth, Tom Renshaw, Guy Aitchison and many others, who push me to work hard and hopefully keep progressing.
